Our K-5 second language learner students recently had the profound opportunity to experience a truly unforgettable West African drum and dance class led by the incredibly talented Etienne Tolno. What transpired was nothing short of spectacular, leaving both students and staff captivated by his vibrant instruction and mesmerizing performance.
From the moment Etienne began, his passion for West African culture and his mastery of drum and dance were palpable. He didn't just teach; he transported our students to a different world, making complex rhythms and movements accessible and exciting. It was remarkable to witness how quickly our young learners, many of whom are still navigating a new language, became fully immersed. Their eyes were wide with wonder, their bodies swayed to the infectious beats, and their voices, initially hesitant, soon joined in a joyous chorus, singing along with uninhibited enthusiasm.
Etienne Tolno's ability to connect with and inspire young minds, particularly those with diverse linguistic backgrounds, is truly exceptional. He fostered an environment of curiosity, participation, and pure joy. This experience was more than just a class; it was a powerful demonstration of how music and movement can transcend language barriers, build confidence, and create a shared, exhilarating cultural experience.
We are immensely grateful to Etienne Tolno for bringing such an impressionable and enriching performance to our school. It was a highlight of the year, and an experience that will undoubtedly resonate with our students for a long time to come. Highly recommended for any educational setting seeking to inspire, educate, and uplift through the power of West African artistry.
